What this means for you: these upgrades show up in what your home is worth when you sell. In New England, a new garage door, a steel entry door, and a minor kitchen remodel have added more at resale than they cost.
According to the Remodeling 2025 Cost vs. Value Report (www.costvsvalue.com), a garage door replacement in New England with an average job cost of $4,317 added an estimated $15,081 in resale value, or 349.3 percent of its cost. These are regional averages, not a quote or an appraisal. What a project adds to your home depends on the house, the market, and the finished work.

What waiting can cost you
If a window or door already needs replacing, putting it off rarely saves money.
- $15,400Average homeowners insurance claim for water damage and freezing, 2019 to 2023. Water is one of the most expensive things that can go wrong in a house.
- Often not coveredThe standard homeowners policy form excludes wear and tear, deterioration, and rot, so slow damage from a failing window or door often lands on you, not your insurer. Check your own policy.
- A bigger jobCaught early, a leaking window or door is a replacement. Caught late, it can be the replacement plus rotted framing, insulation, drywall, and paint.
- Every monthDrafty windows and doors raise heating and cooling bills for as long as they stay drafty.
